Together we make Wisconsin a better place to bike
The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin is the only statewide bicycling advocacy group. We work with the state, counties and local municipalities to promote better bicycling conditions for everyone.
The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin makes policy and budget recommendations and works to improve state laws that affect bicycling. We also provide local support for street and bike facility planning, as well as funding and legal issues related to bicycling.
Some legislative history
In the 1990s, the Bike Fed was the driving force behind a significant update of the state's bicycle laws. The updated laws more clearly defined bicycles as vehicles and clarified that
bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other road users. More recently, we pressed for - and won - three important pieces of state legislation:
-
A fair share of funding for Wisconsin bicycling
- Complete Streets Legislation that provides for accommodation of bicycle and pedestrian facilities in new or reconstruction road projects funded by the state of Wisconsin
- Anti-"dooring" legislation that requires parked motorists to look for bikers and other road users before opening their car doors
Please keep us informed of bicycling issues in your community. Email
