A. Route of the Badger: Connecting Southeast Wisconsin A relatively small investment that builds upon existing infrastructure can improve the connectivity of the trail system; better connecting people to the places they want to go. When more people can use trails to get where they want to go, the benefits to the economy, public health and transportation become the foundation of healthy, sustainable communities.
B. Innovation in Bike Share Topics covered include the following: 1) The growing and evolving landscape of bike share in the U.S.; 2) Technology innovation in the industry and 3) Bike share success stories
C. Collaborative Campaigns for Complete Streets and Planning Complete Streets are streets that are safe and attractive for all ages, abilities, and modes of travel. Proper public policy and planning for Complete Streets carries many benefits: improved public health, more efficient public spending, and a more inclusive community with better access to amenities. However, social and political barriers often obstruct progress in this area. We examine past and present campaigns for Complete Streets, analyze the social psychology operative in successful campaigns, and offer friendly suggestions for communities seeking to enact Complete Streets in their localities.
D. When the Fire Starts to Burn:The Power of Bicycles as Community Transformation The presentation will explore the direct connection between community bicycle rides and the advancement of a bicycle advocacy agenda centered on bicycle equity, community transformation and social justice in low- to moderate-income communities of color.

A. Vernon County: 0-50 the Community Way and Building Bike Friendliness in a Northwoods County Vernon Trails is built on strong relationships between the non profit and land managers of both public and private lands to design, build, maintain and advocate for the creation of over 50 miles of singletrack on nine properties. We also host over 100 events promoting silent sports in the area. Learn how to be a successful trails organization within a community regardless of membership size or budget.
The Vilas County area has riding opportunities of all types for all ages. They include the 55-mile Heart of Vilas asphalt trails, new developments by Great Headwaters Trails, the WinMan Trails 1300 acre mountain biking and silent sports park, AND great road riding. Hear about the work they are doing to make trail connections and more.
B. Bicycle Network Analysis and Neighborhoods Improving Active Transportation Infrastructure People have bicycles and are looking for places to ride and reasons to ride. Businesses want to support biking and need to know how. Communities need easily implementable programs that increase ridership, bike culture and support for biking. Bike riders need to feel supported in the transportation mix. All of these components are part of a complete Bicycle Network Analysis. C. Counting and Identifying Bicyclists and Pedestrians,Trips and Routes/ Where Are We Going and How Many Are We? The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) will present information learned from their regional non-motorized count program, including a summary of the counting activities conducted during and after the FHWA pilot project, volume trends and the observed impacts that temperature and weather conditions have on count volumes, examples of how the count data has been used, how SEWRPC coordinates with other local governments, and a summary of next steps as SEWRPC continues to expand the capabilities of its count program. The second half of the session will focus on the way we count bikes, which has evolved from clipboards to cameras, and we are now on the verge of understanding people’s biking patterns without ever setting foot on the ground. Data from Strava and other fitness tracking devices allow us to identify cyclists’ and runners’ most common routes via location-enabled smartphones. Data providers have developed ways to identify bike and pedestrian trips of all kinds, which produce meaningful metrics. D.Just Bikes An overview of the Dane County area JUST Bikes coalition, including history, current projects, and future goals. During this presentation JUST Bikes coalition members will speak about successes, challenges and the upcoming, fully funded plans of the coalition to continue its work towards bicycle and non-motorized transportation equity.

Sylvan Hill Mountain Bike Park:Case Study in Community Bike Development / Wisconsin River Trail; No is Not in our Vocabulary This firs t part of the session will be a presentation on the process of bringing the Sylvan Hill Mountain Bike to completion in Wausau, WI. We will chronicle the process of identifying the opportunity, working with municipal government, fundraising, contractor selection and CWOCC’s volunteer efforts on the project. IMBA Chapters and bike clubs can learn how to engage community leaders, identify sources for fundraising and mobilize local volunteers. The second portion will provide information on the Wisconsin River Trail – and how to create a vision and a non-profit, convince the local government/community to get on board, and find ways to financially support your “inheritance” that you are gifting to generations to come, a legacy which can only be built upon.
B. “Bicycling on Wisconsin’s West Coast” La Crosse exceeds the national average by more than four times for rates of commuting to work by bicycle. Learn about the community’s commitment and actions to improve bicycling in and around the Coulee Region, including efforts to build upon the city’s silver ranking from the American League of Bicyclists, green complete streets program, their first bicycle boulevard and more.

D. Perceptions versus Reality of Walkability and Bikeability in Milwaukee’s Near Southside Minority populations, especially those of Latino descent, continue to be underrepresented in the bicycling community.Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers, SSCHC’s leading obesity prevention department, “Healthy Choices,” has completed many initiatives to gather pertinent data about issues that affect cyclist and pedestrian wellbeing in the near Southside of Milwaukee.This presentation will showcase the key results found assessing the infrastructure and streets conditions for walking and biking in Milwaukee’s predominantly Latino neighborhood; along with the perceptions, barriers and needs from residents.

A. Cycling Without Age: building partnerships to improve community wellbeing A panel of partners in Stevens Point will share their success collaborating to bring a Cycling Without Age program to the community. The Stevens Point chapter of CWA offers older adults and those with differing abilities free rides in a “trishaw” as a simple and safe way to spend time outdoors and socialize. Trishaw rides begin in June 2018 for residents of 19 area senior living centers, assisted living centers, community-based residential facilities, and nursing homes. Stevens Point CWA will share their story with communities interested in CWA as a strategy for addressing health inequity, reducing loneliness, and promoting a positive cycling culture in their community.
B. A Public Health Approach to Getting More People Biking and Walking: examples from Indiana & Wisconsin Join the Wisconsin Active Together movement in 2018! By completing a brief application, local coalitions who work to make it easier to walk, bike and be active will receive recognition for existing efforts and commitment to include policy and systems strategies in community work. A multidisciplinary team of state-level and community-based partners developed “Wisconsin Active Together” based upon a shared desire to bolster ground-up momentum for walking and biking, by lifting up what’s working in rural, mid-size AND urban communities, and catalyzing visible action on active transportation. Indiana - Studies continuously confirm that regular bicycling has a positive impact on health. With obesity rates and resultant health issues on the rise, many communities are encouraging residents to take up biking as a form of transportation; however, without a comprehensive public health approach, many encouragement efforts will fall short. This presentation will give an overview of our environment’s impact on individual choices. Attendees will learn how to increase bicycling by using policy, systems, and environmental change approaches in order to create long-term impacts on the environment and individual.
C. Best Practices in Separated Bikeways This presentation will provide an overview of the state of the practice for separated bikeways, which are defined as exclusive space for bicyclists along or within a roadway that is physically separated from motor vehicles and pedestrians. The presentation will start with a brief history of bicycle facilities in the US before moving on to planning and design considerations for low-stress bicycle networks and separated bikeways.
D. Going Beyond Bikes to Empower Communities and Bolster Equity Bikes are a very important tool to build community and conquer equity. With the support of local organizations working to strengthen the bicycle culture within underrepresented communities in Madison, we will explore cases of success and effective approaches on how to bolster Equity and create strong communities around biking. Together we will make the point of going beyond bikes and understanding what are the critical issues to address, and how to solve those issues when empowering communities and aiming to bolster equity.
